Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Kudat Project Update

 

BEST has already started to make considerable progress in a variety of projects that are being undertaken in Kudat.

Project Director

To facilitate these projects, Borneo Eco Tours has hired Datuk Markus Majihi as the projects director for all projects in Kudat. Datuk Markus is ideally suited to this role as he is a local Rungus man who has vast experience and skills in managing business and people development matters.

Strategic Plan

As a result we have been able to develop a strategic plan for our projects in Kudat. This in-depth document examines the current situation in Kudat, discusses some options and plans for improvement and details a new marketing strategy for the region.

 

Our Strategic plan has been presented to the communities of Kudat, as well as to ..  all with positive results.

Tourism Committee - Mompilis

On 27th April 2006 & 29th April 2006, the villagers of Mompilis held a meeting and a Village Tourism Committee was successfully formed as follows:-

  4. To implement cleanliness and landscaping;
  5. To connect with Borneo Eco Tours (BET) for tourist arrivals;
  6. To meet and discuss once a month; and
  7. To cooperate with all relevant authority, tourism player and individuals to develop tourism in this village.

Study Tour to Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL) & Other Tourism Facilities

A Study Tour to Kundasang & Sukau Rainforest Lodge has been arranged for the following 5 persons to be implemented between 19 and 21 Jun 2006.

Mountain Bicycles for Tourists Use

BEST has already procured 6 mountain bikes to be sent to Bavanggazo Longhouse once the store is ready. These bicycles are to create new activities for tourists. On 28/4/2006, Mr. Angkung was briefed on the management of the bicycles. He was also advised on the repairs to the toilets and advised to add more facilities to the longhouse rooms e.g. cloth hanger, strings and tables etc. to further improve the facilities.

Maranjak Meeting

On 11th May 2006 a meeting was held to discuss the service improvements that are needed with Maranjak.

Buffalo Riding

On 11th May 2006 the Buffalo riding site at Kg. Tinangol was surveyed with villagers.

 

Mompilis Gotong-royong

A group of Basel Christian Church Malaysia (BCCM) Youth will visit Mompilis on the 7th June 2006 and join the gotong royong with the villagers to clean the longhouse surroundings; Cleaning and landscaping of the village surroundings will be continued on a gotong-royong basis.

Thatching/ Mompilis

It has been agreed that this project will be discussed further with the Tourism committee of Mompilis.

Terongkongan Laut PCS Church

On 3rd & 4th Jun 2006, a small group will accompany Mr. Albert Teo while visiting the village of Terongkongan Laut to assess what materials or assistance needed to be given to help complete the construction and furnishing of Kg. Terongkongan Laut PCS Church (which is an eyesore to visitors to the beach). Following this visit, a plan of action will be created for Teronkongan Laut PCS Church including proper architectural development plan for the Church.

 

The next stage of this project will be to build Toilets complete with water tower and tank. This will be followed with the building of a water well complete with water pump to pump to toilet tanks (to enable revenue collection from day visitors to beach to maintain toilet).

Field trip by Edith Cowan University/Community Project at Terongkongan Laut

A group of students from Edith Cowan University will be arriving in () to conduct several projects in Kudat. As well as writing reports on the future cultural tourism potential of the area, these students will be helping to paint the church at Terongkongan Laut.

 

Justine Nagorski Studying Cultural Tourism

Justine Nagorski of Edith Cowan University, Australia, will be studying the people of Kudat and the benefits of cultural tourism for her honours project.
