160 persons consisting of villagers from Terongkongan Laut and Darat, students from a local school, representatives from Pertubuhan Teknologi Dan Penyelesaian Ekopelancongan Borneo, Environmental Action Committee Sabah (EAC) and Matunggong District Office joined forces to clean Terongkongan Beach of Kudat and planted trees in conjunction with the World Environment Day 2008. Undeterred by rain and strong wind, the half-day program was launched by the Assistant District Officer of Matunggong District Office, represented by En. Ajis Podoh.

Ajis in his opening remarks thanked the organizers and participants for their contributions to the environmental campaign. “It’s important to safeguard our beautiful beach from human’s destruction. Our beach is an asset that can generate bounteous returns, besides rendering unique recreational experience for us. Hence, such concerted conservation effort is conducive to impart awareness especially to the younger generation”, he said. Ajis also proposed that a tourism committee is formed in Terongkongan to identify and initiate prospective tourism projects.

In addition to the program, an introduction to Garden and Food Waste Management was addressed by Helen Erut, Officer from the Secretariat of EAC Sabah. In total, 34 tree seedlings, fertilizers and various gardening equipment were sponsored by EAC Sabah for this significant event. Participants managed to collect 120 kilograms of wastes from the beach.

Pertubuhan Teknologi Dan Penyelesaian Ekopelancongan Borneo’s secretary, Charro Aron Charles remarked that their latest campaign is a success. “Today I see involvement from everyone including children in this campaign. Though we have only chosen one beach for the program, I believe that the message is now clear that conservation is everyone’s obligation. I eagerly hope that more government and private organizations will initiate similar campaign in their area”, said Aron.

“Since 2000, we have been advocating conservation of environment and developing local community in Sabah. Terongkongan Environmental Care Campaign is our latest commitment, on top of our many other projects in the pipeline”, he added.

The campaign was jointly organized by Environmental Action Committee Sabah (EAC) and Pertubuhan Teknologi Dan Penyelesaian Ekopelancongan Borneo.
