About Borneo

Borneo is the world’s third largest island in the world, and is made up of 3 different countries: Malaysia (the states of Sabah and Sarawak), Brunei, and Indonesia. Located smack dab in the middle of the Southeast Asian tropics, this giant, rugged island boasts incredible biodiversity. Its ancient rainforests that have been around for over a 140 million years, home to a myriad of rare and endangered wildlife species including the Bornean Orangutan. Naturally, this also means that the entire island is filled to the brim with incredible destinations – be sure to check out our Top Attractions page for great ideas of where to visit!

Sukau Rainforest Lodge

For most of our guests, the biggest highlight of their trip to Borneo would be a visit to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, the only National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World in Malaysia as well as a winner of Sabah’s Best Nature Lodge, in addition to numerous other local and international awards. The property sits atop of Belian-wood stilts that emerge from the mighty Kinabatangan River, an important waterway that runs deep through the heart of the Bornean rainforest.

This, coupled with the river’s great width and relatively short surrounding trees providing ample amounts of sunlight and visibility, makes the Kinabatangan River one of the best places for wildlife sighting and photography in the world - it is here that you will get the chance to experience coming face to face with Sabah’s most iconic animals, such as Orang Utans and Proboscis Monkeys, during exciting river safari cruises. And despite being out in the middle of the jungle, the ecolodge does not compromise on comfort and amenities, providing a rare blend of both nature and luxury. It’s the perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and families alike.

Endangered Wildlife

Aside from the Kinabatangan River, other locations throughout Borneo will enamour you with their uniqueness. Selingan Island, for example, is a beautiful island where endangered turtles regularly visit to lay their eggs. Among other endangered species are also the orangutan and the Bornean sunbear. They will surely captivate you when you visit them at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sandakan

Natural-made Wonders

Danum Valley is one of the last remaining untouched places in the world, with primeval forests and incredible diversity of life, while the Tabin Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest wildlife reserve in all of Malaysia. And if you fancy yourself a rough and tough adventurer type, then consider challenging yourself to climb the Summit of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Borneo, and savour its breathtakingly gorgeous views. Treks into the ‘Lost World of Sabah’, Maliau Basin, and the spine of Borneo, Crocker Range are no-brainers as well. Adventurous sorts may also find themselves entranced by the world’s largest cave system, right here in Mulu National Park, Sarawak, which is also home to the famous Mulu Pinnacles – unique massive rock formations that jut upwards from the ground.

Birding Adventures

Devoted birdwatchers will be thrilled by the many endemic species of Bornean birds found in their natural habitats. If you’re passionate about birdwatching, and happen to find yourself in this little corner of Southeast Asia, then look no further than our specialised Birding tours accompanied by our world-class birding guides.

Beaches and Islands

Sabah, Borneo is also a haven for beach-goers and divers. It’s surrounded by numerous beautiful islands, such as the world-renowned Sipadan Island and Langkayan Island, that have been consistently rated as some of the best diving spots in the world. The beaches themselves are to die for, with crystal clear waves hugging along white sandy coasts – and you won’t even need to go that far; Tunku Abdul Rahman Park Marine Park is just a stone’s throw away from the capital, Kota Kinabalu.

Cultural and Heritage

Speaking of which - from the moment you begin your adventure in Borneo, landing in either the city of Kota Kinabalu or Kuching, be prepared to fall in love with the locals and their unique way of life. Borneo is home to various indigenous people, many of whom have preserved their traditional values and culture. Experience what it’s like to live amongst some of the oldest tribes in Borneo by visiting their tribal homes, such as the Mari-Mari Cultural Village in Sabah or one of the many Long houses in Sarawak. You can also immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Brunei, as hallmarked by its Royal Palaces, majestic mosques and charming water villages. Rest assured that Borneo, though incredibly diverse with many practices that may seem exotic to the outside world, is a place that is peaceful and harmonious.

Endless Fun

Besides these remarkable destinations, there are many other exciting and memorable activities to be found in Borneo. You can brave the rapids and go white-water rafting, ride an antique train that dates back to the British colonial era, cycle along pristine beaches while passing through villages, visit tea plantations and agricultural parks, and sample some of the scrumptious local delicacies and beverages. In short, Borneo has a little something for everyone, and should most definitely be on your bucket list of places to go to at least once in your lifetime. So, if you’ve always wanted to visit Borneo, then set a date, book a ticket, pack up your bags, and let your worries fly away as you unearth the secrets of this tropical paradise.
