What started as a vision by our founder Albert Teo has grown into a thriving company synonymous with responsible travel. From a single office in Kota Kinabalu, we've expanded our footprint across Sabah with offices now in Sandakan and Lahad Datu, and two lodges, the Sukau Rainforest Lodge and Utan Rainforest Lodge creating unforgettable adventures that connect travellers to nature while supporting local livelihoods. Our milestones reflect our belief that tourism can be a force for good. In recognition of his hard work and influence over the years as a pioneer in ecotourism, he was recently awarded by the Sabah Tourism Board with the Silver Sabah Tourism Champion (Leadership) Award 2025.
Integral to this journey is the creation of our non-profit arm, Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Society, established to ensure that our tourism efforts translate into long-term social and environmental impact. BEST Society reflects our belief that tourism, when done right, can be a force for good, channeling resources into clean water, education, reforestation, and community empowerment across Sabah.
A graduate in Economics (Honours) from the University of London in 1977, Albert Teo has been in the tourism industry for the last forty-eight years (1977-2025). In October 2006, he was appointed Adjunct Lecturer by Edith Cowan University ECU, Australia, for his contribution to the ecotourism industry, and in 2012, conferred a Fellow of the University for his work with the university as well as his philanthropy, community and social work. In March 2016 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor of University Malaysia Sabah UMS. In 2019 he was awarded the Sabah Tourism Special Minister’s Award for his significant contribution in the tourism industry over 42 years.
A keen photographer, he has also trekked over 1000km in Borneo, as well as published ten books; some of these include the best-selling "Sabah - Land of the Sacred Mountain", "Journey through Borneo", "Saving Paradise - The Story of Sukau Rainforest Lodge" co-authored with Carol Patterson, "A Souvenir of Sabah Malaysian Borneo" and Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in 2021. In 2025 he published the latest book “Reflections of Sukau Rainforest Lodge” to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the lodge.
Albert is presently focusing his energy on developing social entrepreneurship through his community/environment foundation, BEST Society. His integrated community-based ecotourism project named Kiulu Farmstay, which launched in 2015, has been handed back to the community, including assets worth over RM450,943. Currently, Albert is collaborating with a local business owner and Rafflesia expert from Adenna Rafflesia Garden, a prominent Rafflesia attraction situated in Poring, Ranau, Sabah, to elevate the attraction's overall quality and visitor experience.
