Its 440 square kilometers of lowland virgin rainforest, bordered by the Danum and Segama Rivers, is home to over 200 species of tree, 110 species of mammals, many indigenous, and 275 species of bird.
Better still, Danum Valley is a protected area managed by the Sabah Foundation. This means it’s equipped with all the facilities needed for the study and observation of wildlife.
Canopy walkways and nature trails allow safe and convenient viewing of orang utan, proboscis monkey, clouded leopard, Malaysian sun bear, the civet and countless other rare species in their natural environment.

Morning Moods in Danum Valley

If you stay in a lodge, you can spend the night in Danum Valley. There’s something mystical about awakening in this 60-million-year-old rainforest. In the misty dawn you can hear the calls of animals unseen in massive trees.
After breakfast, head out and in search of gibbons swinging through the trees (though they’re notoriously hard to spot and move at quite a clip). And Danum is one of the very few places you can view orang utans in their natural environment. Having a good guide on hand can really help you discover the animals you’re interested in.

Danum Coffin Trail

Meanwhile ornithologists can take special trails such as the Rhino Ridge Trail, Elephant Ridge Trail, Perwina Trail and the Sungai Palum Trail.
Especially good for bird fanciers is the Segama Trail. Its 270-meter canopy walkway running 27 meters above the forest floor, offers great opportunities to view and photograph birds perching in nearby trees. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle or Bornean Birstlehead.
Many animals snooze during the heat of midday but if you’re up for it, you can trek up to View Point for a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the entire valley.
