Being dubbed as one of the most biodiverse places on earth, Sabah makes up part of Borneo as the third largest island in the world. And scattered around are smaller islands which are known to be great scuba diving hotspots and divine destinations to escape to. Decorated with beautiful coral gardens and abundant in marine life, its underwater realm is a whole new world to discover.

Chilling on Selingan Island’s beach

Be it scuba diving, snorkelling or just lying on the white sand beach to work on your tan, the islands will always make for the perfect getaway from life’s many stressful demands. There are a total of six protected marine parks in Sabah and they are the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Pulau Tiga, Turtle Island Park, Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Sipadan Island Park and Tun Mustapha Park. These marine parks have become significant locations, especially for research purposes and conservation of marine life.
Sipadan Island is an example of Sabah’s famous dive site, and is often rated as one of the world’s top diving destination because of its marine habitat that’s incredibly biodiverse, with thousands of fish species, numerous sharks and sting rays, as well as hawksbill and green sea turtles.

Green Sea Turtle. Photo credit to Borneo Dream

This wasn’t always the case though. At one point, the marine life in Sipadan was threatened by frequent human activity and in 2004, the government had to step in to change that. Night dives were banned, divers were limited to only 120 pax, and resorts on the island were told to move out and away. Such a move has helped to protect the sensitive and fragile marine area, and since then, the site has begun to flourish with aquatic life again.
Though there is generous amount of sunshine throughout the year, there’s also the fickle presence of showers here in Sabah, Borneo. So, the best time to visit the islands would be during the drier seasons between February and May. If you’re planning a trip to Borneo to experience its island vibes and diving scene, those months would be the most ideal compared to the wetter months of October to January.

A school of Snappers.
