As of December 2015, BET and SRL together with other donors have contributed total of RM 1,840,668.42 in cash and kind to BEST Society for environmental and community projects such as Kg Kiau Medical Camp where 190 villagers receive free medical and dental services; organic farming project in Kudat sponsored by Shell; Bengkoka living water project in Kg Lugu, Kg Pandan, Kg Mandamai, Kg Kobon and Kg. Tutuwon sponsored by ConocoPhillips and a local bank and Bee farming project, its new initiative at Sukau .

BET and SRL have for over ten years been contributing RM32 to its Community Development Contribution CDC for each international adult guest who stays in Sukau Rainforest Lodge. SRL was recently awarded the Best Independent Accommodation of the PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Tourism InSPIRE (Industry’s Sustainability Practitioners Inspiring Responsibility and Excellency).

BET and BEST Society recently helped set up a new association, Mukim Ulu Kiulu Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (MUKEST) Society to oversee the community development in Kiulu Farmstay. The project which originally covered three villages Kg. Kg Mantob, Kg Dumpiring and Kg Pinagon Baru has now been extended to thirteen villages. With the new setup, BET will set aside RM10 for all guests who stay at the Fig Tree and RM10 from its quad bike tour to the community development Contribution CDC Fund under MUKEST Society. Kiulu Farmstay activities include the newly proposed “Lembah Embun” homestay, The Fig Tree chalet accommodation, quad biking, river tubing, jungle trekking, river picnic, craft and bamboo furniture making, community market and Kiulu SRI rice farming. Together with BET, BEST Society and MUKEST Society, Kiulu Farmstay will pioneer community based tourism development.

As the Community Development Manager, Pius will serve as a Changemaker to the community to deliver the true message behind the idea of sustainability. BET strongly emphasizes on the aspect of community transformation. The act of giving back along with empowering the community is deemed to be material in promoting sustainable development.

Development programmes involving environment and the community can only realise their full potential if knowledge and technology are shared effectively, and if local communities are motivated and committed to achieve success. One of the central tasks is communication. Communication enables planners, when identifying and formulating development programmes to consult with people in order to take into account their needs, attitudes and traditional knowledge and custom. Pius, as the new community development manager, would be helping to communicate and empower them to recognize important issues, make key decisions, find common ground for action, and develop a sense of identity and ownership.

On top of that, development involves change, new ways of doing things. This would require Pius to make sure that the people would have the confidence to make the project work, along with acquiring new knowledge and skills they need. Communication media and techniques can be powerful tools to advise people about new ideas and methods, to encourage adoption of those ideas and methods, and to improve training overall.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

As part of a new sustainable development agenda, BET, SRL AND BEST Society are adopting the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as our guiding principles when developing and implementing community and environmental projects throughout Borneo. The U.N.’s decision, as stated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, to declare 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development is “a unique opportunity to advance the contribution of the tourism sector to the three pillars of sustainability – economic, social and environmental, while raising awareness of the true dimensions of a sector which is often undervalued.”

To-date, Kiulu Farmstay, an integrated approach to develop community based tourism in Kiulu, has adopted nine out of 17 SDGs: End Poverty; End Hunger; Achieve Food Security; Gender Equality; Decent Work for All; Reduce Inequality; Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns; Conserve Oceans and Seas; Protect Biodiversity; Peace and Rule of Law. BET, SRL and BEST Society seek to alleviate poverty by creating more employment opportunities of local community using tourism as a catalyst, to build capacity of the local community through skill training and enhancing their traditional skills and to improve price and income through better marketing activities of the natural assets, products and services provided by the communities.

KOTA KINABALU, 25 May 2016: Pius Jaimin, Borneo Eco Tours BET Adventure Guide has just been redesignated as the Community…

[16,4
["post-859","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-news
["GET
