Bario - Krayan - Ba' Kelalan
Adventure awaits for you as you get back in time where walking was the means of getting anywhere (although there are 4WDs as transportation to go around nowadays). Located in the north-eastern corner of Sarawak is the famous Bario Highland, a Kelabit territory, one of the minority Orang Ulu tribes of Sarawak. The journey will takes you to the heart of Borneo while passing by villages with its own historical tales.
Pick up from your hotel Lobby to Miri airport for your flight out to Bario. Meet on arrival in Bario. Have a short tour of Barion Long house before lunch at the local canteen. After lunch we depart by 4WD to Pa’Ukat longhouse, then to Pa’Lungan. (The journey takes about 1hrs on a logging road on dry weather but will take more than an hour if it is during raining season). Stop over at the road side before reaching Pa’Lungan. Walk over to Ritong Monument which is just about 10mins from Ritong Homestay where you will stay for the night. Settle in while your guide will prepare you lunch. Dinner and overnight at the headman’s house. (Lunch & Dinner)
After breakfast, trek to Long Repung jungle shelter. Trek time will be 5-6 hours involving a fairly strenuous climb over Singkulup Hill with a few river crossing. We will arrive at Long Repun jungle shelter in the late evening. The shelter is the mid-point journey for us to cross over to Indonesia next day. The site used to be inhabited by the Kelabits (now moved to Pa’Ukat and Pa’Lungan) over 50 years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak. Overnight at the jungle shelter. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
We have an early trek today to cross over the Indonesian territory. Trek time is around 5 hours and will cross over one hill (Ra’an Bulu) which marks the Malaysian/Indonesian boundary, with a stop at the bamboo plantation for lunch. We are now in Indonesia and we will arrive at a local village called Pa’Rupai where the tribe here is called Lun Dayeh. We will continue another 2-3 hours trek (3 km) across the rice fields to arrive at Ba’Kelalan. We will be arriving late in the afternoon and proceed straight to the lodging house for dinner and overnight. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
After breakfast, trek to Pa Sarui view point for have a bird’s eye view of the beautiful Ba’Kelalan valley.- great view for photography of the Ba’Kelalan village (if weather permits). Trek down leisurely and stroll along the river and back to the homestay. After lunch we proceed to Long Lemutut to see some left behind artifacts’ of the mythical giant Upai Semaring which tells us that once there must have been a thriving trade route from Kalimantan through Ba’Kelalan to Brunei – a rock with a hole where he pounded paddy, a black rock with a flat top where he sharpened his parang, and four grooved rocks that formed his stove. Proceed to Asang Langai Botanical Garden where 87 species of herbal plants are found. Return to Long Langai, take a leisure walk to Buduk Nur Village. Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the paddy field. Enjoy your local dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
After breakfast, standby at Ba’Kelalan airport for the flight to Lawas and Miri and for your onward flight out. (Breakfast)
