Utan Wildlife Experience - Day 1

Day 1

Lahad Datu - Utan Rainforest Lodge

Your adventure begins with an airport pickup and a quick stop at the office for check-in. Then, embark on a 2.5-hour overland journey to reach our ecolodge; Utan Rainforest Lodge, featuring 14 air-conditioned rooms located within the Virgin Jungle Reserve (VJR) of Sungai Kapur.

Indulge in our rooms with ensuite bathrooms and heated showers, as well as our covered restaurant and open deck, dip pool, and not forgetting our bar and gift corner. Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome with a slide show briefing followed by a delectable lunch and check-in thereafter.

Get a taste of Sungai Kapur’s Virgin Jungle Reserve and its world of flora and fauna as you take a hike to Kapur trail. As the day unfolds, pause for a brief tea break before setting off on a late afternoon river cruise for wildlife encounters and a mesmerizing estuary sunset. If weather permits, you may witness a captivating summertime light show courtesy of fireflies as you make your way back to the lodge for dinner.

After dinner, go on a night safari drive for a chance to encounter the nocturnal wildlife that surrounds our forest.

Day 2

Utan Rainforest Lodge

Wake up to the sounds of gibbons and hornbills in the rainforest. After a quick bite, we will set out for a short morning hike. Immerse yourself in the surroundings while getting your heart racing as we visit the Cuckoo Hide to photograph one of Borneo's endemic birds and other birdlife found in the area. Thereafter, return to the lodge to freshen up before enjoying a scrumptious breakfast at the restaurant.

Following breakfast, if weather and sea conditions permit, we'll embark on a river cruise adventure along the coastline, venturing into the Segama River and its mangrove forest. Keep your eyes peeled for a chance in wildlife encounters, such as flying foxes, eagles, and dolphins.

Head back to the lodge to relax and refresh before a hefty lunch. Explore our lodge further at the information gallery, shop for souvenirs, savour our premium in-house beverages at the restaurant and take a dip in our dip pool to beat the heat.

Gear up with your leech socks and get ready for an exciting jungle trek along our many trails. If you're up for an adventure, let your guide know, and they’ll take you on a longer trek through the wilderness.

When the sun sets, tantalise your taste buds with a delicious dinner, and proceed to head out for a night walk around the lodge. Experience the serenity of the night and keep an eye out for nocturnal creatures like civets, leopard cats, mouse deer, and moonrats that rule the night.

Return to the lodge for a good night's rest.

FAQ[Expand All]

What’s the weather like in Borneo?

Borneo enjoys a warm tropical climate all year round, with temperatures averaging between 27–32°C. Generally, the dry season runs from March to September, while the wet season lasts from October to February. However, these seasons are becoming less distinct, so you can often expect a mix of sunshine and short rain showers, usually sunny mornings followed by brief rain in the afternoon or evening. Light, breathable clothing and a rain jacket will keep you comfortable whatever the weather.

Can I see orang utans in the wild?

Spotting orang utans in the wild is a magical experience and yes, you have a good chance! While sightings are never guaranteed, places like the Kinabatangan River and Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre are among the best locations to encounter them.

Do I need leech socks, and where can I buy them?

If you’ll be trekking in the rainforest, especially after rain, leech socks are definitely handy. You can bring your own or pick them up at outdoor shops in Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan. Some lodges including Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL), Utan Rainforest Lodge (URL), and Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) also have them available for guests. They may not be stylish, but they work perfectly! Tip: Tuck your pants into your leech socks for extra protection and peace of mind during your jungle walks.

What’s the difference between Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) and Utan Rainforest Lodge (URL)?

BRL is a luxury eco-lodge in the heart of Danum Valley, a dream for those wanting high comfort in an ancient rainforest. URL, on the other hand, offers a more exclusive, cosy and off-the-beaten-track adventure at Sungai Kapur Virgin Jungle Reserve, where the wilderness feels completely untouched.

Is it safe to travel along Sabah’s east coast?

Yes, it’s safe. Tourist areas like Sandakan, Kinabatangan, and Turtle Islands are well-guarded and regularly patrolled by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM). Travellers visit every day without issues.

When is the best season for birdwatching in Borneo?

Birdwatching is rewarding all year, but April to October is extra special thanks to breeding and fruiting seasons. Migratory species also pass through around September to November, which is a bonus for keen birders!

What should I wear for trekking, river cruises, and city walks?

Keep it light and comfortable! For trekking, quick-dry long pants, breathable tops, sturdy shoes, and leech socks are best. For river cruises, casual wear with sandals or trainers is perfect. In the city, just go with comfortable clothes and walking shoes. A rain jacket or umbrella always comes in handy.

Which flights should I book to reach Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL) or Utan Rainforest Lodge (URL)?

For SRL, book an early morning flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan. For URL, fly early from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu. If early flights aren’t available, no worries. Simply stay overnight in Sandakan (for SRL) or Lahad Datu (for URL) the night before your tour, and you’ll be all set for a smooth start.

Is malaria a concern when travelling to Borneo?

Malaria risk in the main tourist areas of Sabah and Sarawak is very low. While rare cases may occur in very remote villages or deep forest areas, most travellers never encounter it. You can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Do I need to take malaria pills for my trip?

We recommend checking with your doctor before you travel. Some guests prefer to take malaria pills for extra reassurance, but honestly, the best protection is simple: apply mosquito repellent and wear the right attire such as long sleeves and light trousers, and you’ll be well covered.
