Tourism Tax (TTx)

1. What is the Tourism Tax (TTx)?

Effective 1st September 2017, foreign tourists will be charged a flat rate of RM10 per room per night for all Tourism Tax (TTx) registered hotel classifications in Malaysia. The Tourism Tax Bill was passed in April 2017.


2. Who is required to pay the Tourism Tax (TTx)?

Non-Malaysian travellers and foreign passport holders are obligated to pay the Tourism Tax (TTx). This includes tourists, expatriates, and individuals of any nationality visiting Malaysia for leisure or business purposes.

Only travellers possessing a valid Malaysian Identification Card or those with a work permit in Sabah, Malaysia travelling in the state are exempted. Malaysian citizens are exempt from the Tourism Tax, ensuring that they do not incur additional charges during their stay.



3. How do I pay the TTx?

The TTx is collected by your hotel/lodge upon your arrival and may request to photocopy your identification documents such as your passport. If you are Malaysian, only your Malaysian Identification Card is strictly required. This is a standard practice to ensure compliance with the Tourism Tax regulations.
