Once-in-a-lifetime family experience – we saw pygmy elephants, orangutans and more

We stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge in February 2026 with our family, travelling with our children aged 4 and 2, as part of a 4-day, 3-night stay organised by Borneo Eco Tours, including the Kinabatangan River safari.

We were incredibly lucky to see all of the Borneo Big Five, including pygmy elephants, orangutans and crocodiles. Seeing the pygmy elephants in the wild, from relatively close but always at a respectful distance, was very special. We have added some of our photos to this review. It really felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something we will never forget.

We had a very capable guide and an excellent boatman, who was very good at spotting wildlife we would otherwise have missed. All staff, both from Borneo Eco Tours and at the lodge itself, were very friendly and welcoming, and also very attentive to our children.

The lodge itself is beautiful and set right in the middle of the jungle along the Kinabatangan River. Around the lodge there is also an orangutan family, which we encountered during our stay, which was very special to see so close to where we were staying. The two swimming pools are ideal to cool down, especially if you are travelling with children, and were much appreciated in the heat and humidity.

If you go with children, we would recommend including a leisure day to relax a bit more. The journey to Borneo can be long, and the jet lag can still affect the first days. During our first river safari the children fell asleep quite quickly, but fortunately they were awake for the second and third cruises, which turned out to be real highlights.

The food was varied and good throughout the stay, and everything was well organised from start to finish. A nice detail is that the boat used by David Attenborough for one of his Kinabatangan documentaries can also be seen at the lodge.

Finally, the rooms were excellent, comfortable and clean, and everything was very well arranged overall.

We would absolutely recommend Sukau Rainforest Lodge and Borneo Eco Tours, especially for families with young children. Seeing pygmy elephants, orangutans and crocodiles in the wild, and sharing that experience as a family, made this truly unforgettable.

Happy with Ecotours as an organizer

We found EcoTours to be very reliable, professional and serious. Cindy reacted quickly to questions and requests. The visit was super well organized and exceeded our expectations. It’s been very good value for money!

Trip of a Lifetime

I can highly recommend Borneo Eco Tours to organise your trip. We did the Big 5 tour and everything went seamlessly. The only slight hitch was that we were 6 couples and one child and initially 2 couples were booked into one villa at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. However it was remedied fairly quickly. On our tour we only saw 4 of the big 5 as we couldn't spot the Hornbill. However we were thrilled to see a herd if piggy elephants. It was the trip of a lifetime and our 8 year old grandson was enthralled the whole time

Borneo Eco Tours are amazing!

My Husband and I had the best time on the Orangutan Search with Borneo Eco Tour! We saw orangutans at the Sepilok rehabilitation centre & several in the wild both at our lodge & on river tours. We saw lots of other wildlife including 4 of the Borneo Big 5!
All the guides we came across were excellent, informative & very knowledgable.
Our tour was 4 days/3 nights but we could have happily stayed longer, it was the best part of our 3 week trip to Malaysia.
They also ensured that I had plenty of gluten free food options, which I was very grateful for!
They helped make my 40th birthday the best birthday ever!

Outstanding service and unforgettable experience

Our experience with Cindy and the Echo Tours Borneo team was absolutely exceptional from start to finish.

Cindy supported us with great professionalism, calmness and genuine care – even in unexpected situations. Communication was always clear, fast and reassuring, and we truly felt that we were in very good hands throughout the entire journey.

The organisation on site was seamless: transfers, lodges, guides and timing were perfectly coordinated. The local team was warm, knowledgeable and highly attentive, which allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the incredible nature of Borneo without any worries.

Thanks to Echo Tours Borneo, we experienced unforgettable moments in the rainforest, encountered amazing wildlife and enjoyed a journey that was both smooth and deeply enriching.

A heartfelt thank you to Cindy and the entire team – we can wholeheartedly recommend Echo Tours Borneo and would travel with them again anytime.

3D2N in Utan Rainforest Lodge

We did the 3D2N experience in Utan Rainforest Lodge with my girlfriend and we loved it! The welcome was amazing. There were only few people so we felt privileged to do the activites with just our guide Ben. Ben was a very kind and motivated guide and all the informations he gave to us about the wildlife were really interesting. The food was really tasty and there were new dishes every day.

My husband and I had a fantastic time on our 4D/3N safari adventure into the Deramakot rain forests.A true adventure.

My husband and I had a fantastic time on our excursion into the Deramakot rain forests. It was the adventure we always wanted to experience in Borneo. Our guides were engaging, informative and adventurous. We saw snakes, birds, orangutans and a variety of small mammals. The food was great and the A/C in our accommodation a welcomed surprise.

Great lodge with expert guides and very comfortable accommodations

We booked this trip based on reviews previously submitted. The communications were clear and our dates were secured. Leading up to our arrival it was sorted out for pickup and our schedule was set. We were picked up and we went for a visit to the orangutan rehabilitation Centre. The visit was thoroughly enjoyable with our guide Vincent guiding us through the Centre with his expert knowledge and easy rapport. Little did we know that Vincent would be our guide for our stay. After our visit we proceeded to the marina for 100km trip to the resort. Both Vincent and the boat captain were both looking out for wildlife. We had. Several sightings, crocodiles, one orangutan, several hornbills. What an exhilarating ride. The lodge was really nice and everything was prepared for arrival, cool towels refreshments and our luggage was delivered to our villa. We. Were then on our first excursion Vincent was now our guide and boat captain. Each excursion revealed more animals. Food at the lodge was more than satisfactory. Our accommodations were comfortable and immaculately clean. Each day started early and had optional briefings after lunch. One seminar given by Suhaile (Mincho) was so enjoyable his multi-media presentation and abilities to imitate orangutan sounds was something not to miss. This adventure was something we had planned for a year. We couldn’t have asked for better result.

An Unforgettable Wildlife Journey

We recently completed a 4-night, 5-day trip with Borneo Eco Tours, staying at Sukau Rainforest Lodge and Utan Rainforest Lodge. The entire experience was brilliant from start to finish.
A huge highlight of our trip was the quality of the guiding. Ashraff at Sukau and Sam at Utan were both exceptional. They didn’t just point out animals; they provided deep context and information about the environment and the itinerary. They were even able to answer our more complex questions regarding local society and culture, which added so much value to our stay.
The logistics and facilities were top-notch:
• Accommodations: The rooms at both lodges were very comfortable and well-maintained.
• Dining: The food was (very!) good throughout the trip.
• Atmosphere: The overall vibe was incredibly friendly and welcoming.
We had a fantastic few days in the jungle. Thank you for the memories—we hope to come back!
