Borneo Eco Tours has been part of the adoption programme for two orphaned orangutans for the past 4 years now. These two remarkably special orangutans are Gelison and Chikita, whom we have adopted together since December 2014 through Orangutan Appeal UK. Being part of this adoption programme helps to support the incredible work that Orangutan Appeal UK is doing, such as caring for orphaned and injured orangutans in Borneo.

You can learn more about Orangutan Appeal UK here.

We receive updates about our adopted orangutans Chikita and Gelison every six months, and are always delighted to know about the progress they are making at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

The latest update we received about Chikita is a promising one. She spent almost an entire month venturing into the jungle last year and today, she is continuing to grow in confidence and independence. It’s something to be expected since she is already over 7 years of age. Chikita’s evident love of exploring the great unknown is a good indication that she is moving towards the independent life nature intended for her all along.

Other than that, we’re also super, super excited to receive news that Gelison has finally been released back into the wild where he truly belongs! After eight years of being under the care of the centre He was rescued when he was only 8 months old and has come a long way on his rehabilitation journey at the centre. His skills and confidence improved tremendously and finally, he is able to go ‘home’. Even so, we can’t help but feel a little sad since we’re so used to receiving updates about Gelison.

Organizations such as Orangutan Appeal UK and Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre are doing an amazing job for the protection and conservation of one of the world’s most unique and endangered ape species. In order for them to continue the incredible work that they are doing, they are going to need all the support that they can get. Whether it’s volunteering, donation or participating in their adoption programme, any kind of contribution will help in the conservation efforts of orangutans in need!
