Borneo Eco Tours recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary at Le Meridien and the evening’s main highlights was the presenting of a cheque worth RM7,200 from Borneo Eco Tours to the Bornean Sun bear Conservation Centre for the “My Bear Adoption Program”. The cheque was presented to Dr. Wong Siew Te, the founder of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sepilok, Sandakan. In return, Dr Wong presented an official adoption certificate and a full blown photo of the sun bear.
The “My Bear Adoption Program” is a program that allows the donor to adopt and sponsor a bear for an entire year, which helps Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to meet the costs of the bear’s rehabilitation journey.
To commemorate the adoption, BET held a contest to name the sun bear, which was named Ronnie-2 by his previous owner, and the lucky winner was announced during the event. Out of 150 entries, there was one name that stood out and won us over. The winner for the contest is Elsie Maria Jopony who chose the new name ‘Bintang’ for our newly adopted sun bear. A heartiest congratulations to you, Elsie! When we asked her why she chose the name ‘Bintang’ for our Sun Bear, she explained that it was because the distinctive pattern on the bear’s chest resembled a bintang which actually means ‘star’ in English, and she couldn’t have chosen a better name! Bintang is hands down, the perfect name for the new addition to Borneo Eco Tours’ family.
