Highlight of our Malaysia Trip!
We booked through Borneo Eco Tours after stumbling across their website by accident. After reading the reviews, we made the decision to do a 3 day, 2 night adventure out to the Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Danella, our tour consultant, organised everything through email and made booking this trip effortless. She provided thorough itineraries and was quick to respond with any enquirers we had.
On the day we arrived to Sandakan airport, we made the mistake of taking ourselves to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. While the others waited for us at the airport, Danella reached out to check if we were okay. When we informed her we didn’t realise we were being picked up, she reassured us not to worry and that our guide would meet us at the centre!
Shortly after our guide and groups arrival, we were taken in to see the rehabilitated Orang Utans. It was an eye-opening experience and we appreciate the work done to save such precious animals. We also had the chance to visit Sunbears across the road!
After, we made our way overland the Sukau Rainforest Lodge. The 2 hour van ride was super comfortable and our guides were incredibly friendly. We arrived at a jetty as we had to be transported across the river to the final destination. As we arrived by speed boat, we were in awe of the location along the Kinabatangan river, amongst the rainforest! We were greeted by many more wonderful staff, a welcome drink and a cool towel to refresh ourselves. After our briefing, by the sweet Sue, we were taken to our rooms!
We booked a superior room with a large king bed and a spacious seating area where we could read our books looking out to the forest. The room was very clean, comfortable and eco friendly! Food at the restaurant and drinks at the bar were amazing.
We spent majority of our days on the water, cruising the Kinabatangan river by boat. Our guide Stephen was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his animals. Never again will I hear such an accurate replica of a variety of animal calls produced by a human. He was on a mission to find elephants! We cruised with Stephen each afternoon and morning spotting different monkeys, Orang Utans, birds, crocodiles and insects. Finally, the morning we were leaving, we did one last cruise, witnessing about 20 elephants swimming across the river!!! It was the moment we had all been waiting for! We were also upgraded for return trip to Sandakan by boat rather than overland again!
We were staying in Kota Kinabalu for the first few days of our Borneo trip so we booked an extra day with Borneo Eco Tours to be guided around Mt Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Springs. Our local guide, Britney, provided extensive, in-depth knowledge about the wildlife, plants and history of Borneo. He was also a bit of a comedian and made us laugh! Unfortunately, the famous Rafflesia at Poring Hot Springs was not in bloom, but Britney made sure we would see some at a private property before our day ended! In fact, we were able to see four!!
I could not recommend Borneo Eco Tours enough!!
