Just back from an AMAZING adventure of traveling, nature & bird photography, experiencing new foods, and making new friends.
It was our first trip to Asia, my friend and I are from NYC but now live in Portugal.
We had done other birding trips in other countries, finding our own transportation, but for the rainforest of Borneo we chose Borneo Eco Tours to show us around.
We are so glad that we did!
They were with us every step of the way. There to greet us on time, offering us a welcome gift at the airport, making us feel comfortable, and attend to our needs, and even helping with our luggage on our last day coming into the airport to get us to the right check-in spot.
We chose a 13 night private tour that covered Sepilok in Sandakan, a ride down the Kinabatungan River, a visit to Danum Valley, and then some time in the Mount Kinabalu National Park. With stays at the Forest Edge Lodge, Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Borneo Rainforest Lodge, the Luma Hotel, and the Sutera Sanctuary Lodge.
My friend and I are bird photographers, and not 'true' birders, so we are more interested in getting a great photo than just seeing the bird in the distance. We asked Selestica in the main office in advance if she could arrange for guides who not only knew about the birds, but were also photographers. And that's what happened.
Our guides Rahman and Jason were not only great guides but also great photographers and they made sure we had the best angles and lighting for the best photo opportunities.
Doing a private tour allowed us to make a few changes along the way, like photographing the colorful parrots at the beach near Kota Kinabalu before heading over to the park.
Special thanks too to our drivers (captains) Irwin and Eddie for getting us to our destinations safely.
The natural beauty that we saw was amazing, with many endemic species, and also many are threatened. I hope that with more tourism, and trips to see this wildlife, there will also be more concern and these areas will be more protected for future generations to appreciate it as well.
Yes, we also saw the 'big 5'. Seeing the orang-utans in the wild was the best!
And photographing from a boat along the Kinabatungan River was a beautiful and unique experience as well.

The organise trip include Kotakinabalu park, Sepiloc, Sukau rainforest lodge, Tabin, and Borneo rainforest lodge. We saw a lot of animal.

I have to mention my guide, Jumaidi is a very professional guide, He taught me all the time about the wild animals, the culture, and gave me any help I needed. Then In the Borneo rainforest, my bird guide is also good. Thanks anyone in my trip, I will share this tours with my Friend's, and come back again.

We booked the 3D2N Tour on Kinabatangan River and couldn’t have wished for a better experience during our time spent at Sukau Rainforest lodge and with the guides from Borneo Eco Tours. Even though the tour was on the shorter hand compared to other tours offered, the effort made by Borneo Eco tours to make the most of our time there was evident.

We were super lucky and saw the Borneo Big 5 on our first day already (note that this is apparently very rare) - a dream come true and definitely a once in a lifetime experience to see those beautiful animals in their natural habitat. Apart from this, we saw an abundance of other local animals, especially birds. Make sure to bring or rent binoculars for sure, as you don’t get super close to the animals.

The guides at Borneo Eco tours knew a lot about the animals & the environment at the river banks and made sure to share their knowledge with us. Also the staff at Sukau Rainforest lodge was exceptionally friendly and helpful which made our stay even more enjoyable. Overall, everything was very well organized! The only minor downside was that the food was not entirely to our taste - this however is very subjective. Vegetarian options were available.

All in all the best thing we could have done during our time in Borneo and we definitely recommend booking the Kinabatangan River Tour!

This experience will be in our heart for the rest of our life. The nature, the people and lodges were so overwhelming that I or better we would like to say to everyone: You should do this once. We have seen so many animals for which we are greatful. The people in the lodges are so incredible kind, hope they are all doing fine.

We travelled with Borneo Eco Tours in September 2023. Vincent was our exceptional guide at Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. He has excellent English, was proactively communicative with us (never leaving us wondering what was going on), anticipated our needs and was always prepared and on time, rain or shine. On top of this, he demonstrates exceptional knowledge of the local wildlife and is an amazing wildlife spotter. Vincent also managed to do all this while piloting and navigating our Safari boat along the Kinabatangan. Because of this, we were fortunate to spot so much wildlife on this trip- Orangutans along with most of the other local primates, all but one of the hornbill species, very luckily - a family group of Pygmy Elephants along the bank of the Kinabatangan river, and the list goes on. He just made this trip so easy for us to enjoy. I am not normally one to give reviews, but this was an incredible experience.

Absolutely 5 star service. I did one day trip to the sanctuarys in Sepilok, that Clare manage to organize for me at the last minute.
The guide Farhan was fantastic, very knowledgeable and attentive. I had a great day that I will highly recommend.

Excellent tour - the joy of seeing Orangutans
I had a great day seeing Orangutans and the Rainforest Discovery Centre, and learned a lot about Sabah. Rahman was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Borneo Eco Tours was excellent with their communications to organize my tour.

Our family (with two boys) went on the 3D2N tour with Borneo Eco Tours and had the most enjoyable time. Our guide, Jonathan, was friendly and extremely knowledgeable and pointed out all the animals and plants to us up and down the Kinabatanganat River and its tributaries. We spotted the Big 5 minus the elephant and countless other interesting species. The Sukau Lodge itself was nice and the food was plentiful and delicious. We also visited the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, Sun Bear Sanctuary and the Rainforest Discovery Centre. We highly recommend this tour.
